Throughout 2025, the European Syriac Union (ESU) carried out intensive diplomatic and political activities, focusing in particular on the current situation of the Syriac people, especially in the Middle East. Within this framework, numerous diplomatic contacts and official meetings were held, notably at the European Parliament as well as in Berlin, Switzerland, the Netherlands, France, the United Kingdom, and Austria. During these discussions, the security challenges, political uncertainties, forced displacement, property rights issues, and violations of religious and cultural rights faced by Syriac Christian communities were addressed in detail.
In the course of the engagements conducted by the ESU, the demands of the Syriac people for the right to live safely in their historical homelands, for the protection of religious freedoms, the preservation of cultural heritage, and the provision of international political guarantees were conveyed clearly and unequivocally to the relevant counterparts. The existing and potential risks faced by our communities were substantiated through field observations and concrete assessments and brought onto the international agenda. It was observed that these meetings were highly constructive and contributed to increased awareness among the relevant institutions.
During this process, the ESU undertook facilitating and supportive efforts to enable visits by certain European Union delegations to Damascus. Through these visits, the living conditions of the Syriac people in Syria were examined directly on the ground; security-related, social, and economic challenges were observed firsthand, and contacts were established with local community representatives. These visits were regarded as an important and positive step, as they allowed international actors to gain direct insight into the actual situation of the Syriac community in Syria.
Through its diplomatic activities in 2025, the European Syriac Union successfully brought the concerns of the Syriac people to international platforms and contributed to increasing the visibility of their rights and demands. In the period ahead, the ESU will continue with determination to serve as the voice of the Syriac people and to pursue its diplomatic and political efforts resolutely, grounded in the principles of peace, security, and human rights.
