Co-President of the ESU holds talks in Iraq: Unity, cooperation and new perspectives

Iraq/Ankawa/Nineveh Plain – The Co-President of the European Syriac Union (ESU), Manuela Demir, recently held a series of important meetings in Iraq to strengthen the unity of our people and expand cooperation both in the homeland and in the diaspora.

Visit to the Bethnahrin Patriotic Union (HBA) – In Ankawa, the first stop was a visit to the Bethnahrin Patriotic Union (Huyodo Bethnahrin Athroyo – HBA). At the party headquarters, Manuela Demir held intensive talks with party chairman Jusef Silwa, board members and committed young people.

The multi-day hospitality provided space to discuss current developments from different perspectives.

Kickoff meeting with the Bethnahrin Women Union (HNB) – Afterwards, an initial working meeting took place with representatives of the Bethnahrin Women Union (Huyodo d’Neshe Bethnahrin – HNB). The focus was on new workshops, training seminars and democracy projects.

When asked how to encourage even more women to get involved, Manuela Demir explained: The Women Union shows how much courage and commitment exists within our people – and that sustainable work only succeeds if we take responsibility together. The ESU plans to further strengthen this cooperation and launch new projects.

Meetings with parties and church leaders – Together with friends from the HBA and HNB, Manuela Demir also held talks with the Assyrian Democratic Movement (ZOWAA) and its representative Yacoob Gewargis Yaco. The main topic was how to strengthen the unity of our people and expand cooperation across borders.

At the meeting with Romeo Hakari of the Bet-Nahrain Democratic Party, it also became clear: Despite different names, our people share a common history, language and future – and only united will we remain strong.

Another highlight was the visit to Bishop Mar Benedectos Younan Hano in Mosul. The importance of the mother tongue as a key to preserving our identity was underlined. During the tour of the historic monastery and the newly built Mar Afrem Church, a strong sign was set: On August 6, 2025 – exactly ten years after the IS invasion of the Nineveh Plain – the first Eucharistic celebration will take place there. A symbol of faith, hope and a new beginning.

Visit to the Nineveh Plain – Finally, Manuela Demir travelled to the Nineveh Plain to get a direct impression, talk to people and learn about their concerns and perspectives.

Only those who listen can understand what moves our people – and those who understand carry the responsibility to make these voices heard. It is both a privilege and our duty to stand by our people, said Manuela Demir.
